LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Cindy Williams, who played Shirley alongside Penny Marshall's Laverne on the hit comedy series Laverne & Shirley, has died, her family announced Monday.
Williams died Wednesday in Los Angeles at the age of 75 after a short illness, her children Zak and Emily Hudson said in a statement issued by family spokeswoman Liza Cranis.
"The death of our kind and hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us an overwhelming sadness that could never truly be expressed," the statement read. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was unique, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and bright spirit that everyone loved.”
Williams also starred in director George Lucas' 1973 film American Graffiti and director Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 film The Conversation. She also joined the Las Vegas cast of Menopause the Musical Harrah's on.
But she was best known for Laverne & Shirley, the spin-off Happy Days, which ran on ABC from 1976 to 1983 and was one of the most popular shows on television in its heyday.
Williams played the straight forward Shirley for Marshall's more daring Laverne on the show about two roommates who worked at a Milwaukee bottle factory in the 1950s and 1960s.
Marshall passed away in 2018.
