Internet and Network Outages in 2022: Overview, Trends, and Solutions (2023)

With the growing dependence on digital giants that provide us with all cloud services,Massive internet outages have become more common.

Uptime Institute 2022 Contingency Analysisnotes that the costs and consequences of downtime are getting worse and that network issues are among the leading causes of IT outages. The big service outages are a strong and persistent reminder that the big tech giants must keep their infrastructure in check. However, larger and longer Internet outages are becoming increasingly impactful and disruptive. Internet outages and power outages do not only affect domestic landline users, they can occur on a much larger scale, affecting mobile and traditional voice communications and even emergency services, causing serious problems for an entire region or country. .

The leader among global outages in 2021 was undoubtedly the seven-hour shutdown of meta-services (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) that occurred on October 4, affecting hundreds of millions of users in the company's corporate partner customer base. . The websitecurfew detector, which monitors network outages, has logged more than 10 million problem reports. Fortunately for us users, Facebook has stated that "the primary cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change" and that "there is no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of the outage".

In 2022, a series of high-profile Internet outages further demonstrated our world's dependence on cloud and telecom service providers and the vulnerability of an increasingly congested infrastructure. Let's take a look at some of the other more notorious crashes and downtime this year.

June 2022: Cloudflare shutdown

On June 21, 2022, Cloudflare experienced an outage affecting traffic across 19 data centers. The outage affected internet access for many apps that rely on it to deliver content to users around the world, including FTX, Shopify, Fitbit, Discord, Omegle, DoorDash, Crunchyroll, NordVPN and Feedly.

AccordinglyOfficial post from Cloudflare, this outage was caused by a change that was part of a long-term project to improve the resiliency of the service in the busiest locations (which is quite ironic). When running the update code, a network configuration code error affected the order of displays for the BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) network routing protocol, and a misconfiguration of the different format changed the order of terms in the BGP prefix list , causing the network to stop displaying its own accessibility information and thus access to the affected websites, preventing servers around the world from contacting the origin servers. This misconfiguration of the router prevented the correct IP routes from being advertised, preventing traffic from being properly routed to Cloudflare's infrastructure.

While only 5% of Cloudflare's network was affected, the outage affected 50% of all requests and delayed or denied access to websites for millions of users worldwide, as seen inCloudflare Outbound Bandwidth Graph:

Internet and Network Outages in 2022: Overview, Trends, and Solutions (1)

Despite a major system outage, Cloudflare was able to quickly find the root cause and perform a service restoration in a matter of hours. According to Cloudflare, the outage started at 06:27 UTC, and by 07:42 UTC, all datacenters were online and functioning properly.

July 2022: Major Rogers out

Another major outage occurred at one of Canada's largest ISPs, Rogers Communications, on July 8, 2022, impacting consumers and businesses alike. The nationwide shutdown even affected banks and emergency services (some people had trouble dialing 911). Customers flocked to coffee shops and public libraries to access alternative networks, while financial institutions reported problems with everything from ATMs to cashless payment systems. For Rogers, it was the second big flop in just over a year.

The outage is said to have occurred due to an update issue thatCloudflare dataconfirmed. As can be seen from the July 8 activity graph, after 08:15 there was a significant increase in BGP updates, peaking at 08:45.

Internet and Network Outages in 2022: Overview, Trends, and Solutions (2)

Several consumer and commercial lawsuits have already been filed against Rogers as a result of this power outage. One is a class-action lawsuit filed by LPC Avocat Inc., seeking C$400 for each customer who subscribed to Rogers, Fido Mobile or Chatr Mobile and did not receive service during the outage. For his part, Rogers offered to compensate customers with a small credit on their next invoice. The company initially said the credit would cost two days of service, then increased the offer to five days. According to Maher Yaghi, an analyst at Scotiabank, even a two-day loan would end up costing the company more than that.65 million dollarsCanadian dollars (sources:financial station,Reuters).

July 2022: Twitter

On July 14, 2022, around 1pm CET, tens of thousands of users reported outages on Twitter. The shutdown extended to mobile devices, iOS and Android, and also affected services such as TweetDeck. After about an hour, it was fixed for most users, but it wasn't until around 5:30pm BST that Twitter released a final update announcing that the issue had been fixed. The platform cited “failures in internal systems” as the cause of the failure.

Previously, Twitter also faced a similar issue in February, which also lasted for nearly an hour.

August 2022: Google search

Google experienced a major outage affecting search and maps starting at 2:12am BST on August 9th, and issues with search indexing were also reported.

Users reported that the search engine was down and there were problems accessing Gmail, Google Maps and Google Images. Attempts to access these services resulted in error messages, including HTTP 500 (indicates a server-side error that is preventing the user request from completing processing) and 502 (the web server received an invalid response from a preserved dependency from the internal server). the user's request) responses from the server. Google services were fully restored in about an hour.

October 2022: WhatsApp

WhatsApp recently experienced a glitch in the early morning hours of October 25th.

Many users in Europe and other parts of the world reported that the service was not working: messages were not being sent. By noon, most of the issues had been resolved. Other metaservices, including Facebook and Instagram websites and apps, were unaffected, unlike the major outage the year before.

Eventually, due to the lack of service, people started sending SMS messages. One of the market leaders in the telecommunications market in the Netherlands,KPN, reported that SMS traffic increased more than six times in the period from 10:00 am to 11:00 am compared to the same time the previous day!

Several other Fortune 500 tech companies have also had outage-related issues this year. Apple iCloud, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are among the technology providers that faced service outages in 2022 that affected their business continuity.

What does downtime mean for a business and how to avoid it?

To quickly estimate the likely cost of downtime, a formula based on the size of the organization and the number of minutes the incident lasted is often used:

Downtime cost = downtime minutes x cost per minute

The larger the size of a company, the higher the cost per minute of downtime. for example acccarbonThis value for small businesses can range from $137 to $427 per minute. For medium and large companies, this figure can reach thousands and tens of thousands of dollars per minute. According toPokémon InstituteOn average, one minute of outage costs $900, while the most expensive outages cost $17,000 per minute.

Internet and Network Outages in 2022: Overview, Trends, and Solutions (4)

AccordinglyITIC Global Server Hardware 2020, Server OS Reliability Report(page 31), 25% of respondents indicated that the average cost of one hour of downtime in lost profits ranges from $301,000 to $400,000 and that the cost of downtime per hour exceeds $300,000 for 88% of organizations.

Internet and Network Outages in 2022: Overview, Trends, and Solutions (5)

For the foreseeable future, teams responsible for managing critical network infrastructure will likely continue to be challenged by the increasing complexity caused by the exponential growth in the number of connected devices and sensors, further exacerbated by the widespread deployment of 5G networks, network virtualization and software-defined networking,

On the one hand, failures will continue to be more frequent and complex until a more resilient infrastructure can be built to support increasing bandwidth demands.

On the other hand, given the global delays in infrastructure expansion and the slow rollout of 5G networks, this offers companies the opportunity to better prepare their networks and their monitoring for the full operational rollout of 5G.

In practice, as demonstrated by the examples shown above, even the best telecommunications providers can experience outages. Thus, everyone must be prepared for incidents and have adequate procedures in place to guarantee the quality of their services. Redundancy, real-time monitoring of service quality, competent customer support teams, robust change management procedures, and timely maintenance are all viable ways to reduce the risk of downtime.

But the best solution is to be vigilant and proactive and use Plan B only as a last resort in the worst case scenario. The idea is to detect problems that are arising in their networks as early as possible and before they affect (even slightly) the quality of their services.

How can telcos shift from a reactive to a proactive approach?

Being proactive in an environment that produces billions of data points every day is not an easy challenge. Some would say it's impossible. There is simply too much data to process. So when an outage occurs, engineering teams typically delve into the vast "black box" of data that was withheld specifically for that emergency, then locate and mitigate the root cause.

For regular daily monitoring, network operators reserve their efforts to monitor whether customers are complaining and whether their rule-based, deterministic alerting systems detect predetermined patterns or thresholds that have been violated.

This becomes even more difficult when millions of regular alerts occur daily; this situation is suboptimal, but not severe enough to interrupt service in a way that affects business continuity. Examples could be visual performance alarms/routing errors, most of which are caused by misconfigurations or human error during implementation. It takes decades of experience and strong intuition to find the root cause of an incident that is being masked by other, more "tolerable" problems.
